Meet the Speaker

The speaker for the Beyond Basics seminar is Jim Blakeman. Learn more about Jim and his professional career in emergency medicine, from his current position with EGO, lectures, associations and writing endeavors.

Who is Jim Blakeman?

James R. Blakeman, the speaker since 1993 brings to the seminars more than a quarter-century of experience in billing management and documentation for physician practices and academic medical centers. His work has been used by national emergency medicine associations. He has written extensively on ED business subjects and is associate editor of the Workbook of Emergency Department Documentation and Coding. Beyond his professional credentials, however, Jim brings a passion for translating quality patient care into the optimal and correct compensation for your work.

Positions

Blakeman is Senior Vice President of Emergency Groups' Office, of Arcadia, California, where he provides billing management and documentation training for dozens of emergency physician practices, including academic medical centers. He previously was with a national emergency physician billing company for 16 years and before that was founder and president of Philadelphia-based Medical Financial Systems Inc.

Lectures

Blakeman has spoken nationally for the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM), the Emergency Department Practice Management Association (EDPMA), Hospital Shared Services, AIC Conferences, Part B News, and Temple University. He has lectured regionally for the American Academy of Professional Coders, American Association of Medical Auditors, and the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

Professional associations

Blakeman has served on the reimbursement committees of the Ohio, Pennsylvania and California chapters of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), and the national AAEM Practice Management Committee and has been a frequent speaker on coding and documentation issues for the Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Minnesota ACEP chapters. He is Past President (2 years) and past Board Member (9 years) of the Emergency Management Organization and a member of the Emergency Department Practice Management Association.

Writing

Besides his editing for the Emergency Documentation workbook (published by Infinity Publishing), Blakeman is a contributor to St. Anthony's Guide to E/M Coding and Documentation, 2nd Edition and to Advanced Coding Education Guide for Emergency Medicine published by the Board of Medical Specialty Coding. He is a contributing author for one article published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine and one in the Western Journal of Emergency Medicine, and has contributed multiple articles to ED Coding Alert, ED Management, APC Advisor, Physician Practice Coder, and Part B News.
